Hot Nutrition Tips: Avocados

Summer is a great time to have plenty of salads!

Adding avocados is a brilliant way to make them more sustaining and nutritious. As well as containing 20 different vitamins and minerals they are an excellent source of good oils. Most of the fat in avocado is oleic acid – a heart healthy monounsaturated fatty acid that is also the major component in olive oil.

Various studies have shown that eating avocado can improve heart disease risk factors like cholesterol, as well as blood triglycerides. Avocados are also a very good source of soluble fibre – this type of fibre can help feed friendly gut bacteria. One average size avocado contains about a quarter of the soluble fibre we are recommended to ear each day.

An interesting study showed that eating avocado can help people lose weight as they keep people feeling fuller for longer which reduces the desire to eat other foods.

Avocados are are also an excellent source of antioxidants, including Lutein and Zeaxanthin – nutrients which are very important for eye health!
